The hot side of a hot valley

Emu Plains lies on the western bank of the Nepean, hard against the foot of the Blue Mountains escarpment, with the Great Western Highway and the railway running through it. Heat monitoring across the Penrith local government area over the summer of 2019 to 2020, using 120 sensors, found Emu Plains the warmest suburb in the area and Mulgoa the coolest.

That is not trivia if you own a tile roof here. Heat is what destroys ridge mortar, and Emu Plains gets more of it than its neighbours.

Heat, mortar and what it costs you

Rigid bedding mortar under a ridge cap expands and contracts with every hot day. Over years the bond crazes, then crumbles, then lets wind-driven rain track under the cap and onto the battens. The repair at that stage is a rebed and repoint. Left for another few seasons it becomes plaster, insulation and timber.

Roof colour, sarking and roof-space ventilation all matter more here than they would in a cooler suburb. If a roof is being recoated or replaced anyway, that is the moment to deal with all three.

Trees, gutters and the river

The older streets carry mature canopy, and the river corridor keeps the litter coming. Full gutters overflow backwards into the eaves, and steel gutters holding wet leaf mulch rust from the inside where nobody can see it. Guard is worth it on the leafier blocks — see gutter repair and replacement.

On the floodplain

Parts of Emu Plains sit on the Nepean floodplain. NSW SES material for the valley notes that in a one-in-one-hundred-year flood, water would inundate parts of Emu Plains, Leonay and Regentville along with parts of Penrith. Roof drainage will not change that, but gutters and downpipes that actually clear an intense storm burst are worth having before the season, not during it.
